| Old Barn/New Studio Photos |
| The photos below show the progress as we are renovating the old barn. This will give us some much needed room for classes. The barn was built about 100 years ago by Dennis' Great Grandpa Finkler. It is 25 x 50 and has a loft. It was made from beechwood that was cleared from the farm. The roof has been bad for many years and it was needing a LOT of repair to make usable for anything but tool storage. We decided to save it and turn it into my new studio. We started with cleaning it out and straightening the frame with a tractor and chains. Then we replaced the wood in all the areas that were bad. The old cement was taken out and we replaced it with new, along with some new footings on the front. We also poured a curb around the back and sides to reinforce the foundation. The entire front wall needed to be replaced. We used wood from a couple of neighboring barns that had fallen down, or were close to it. The large barn in the photo below had a bad foundation and the whole barn went down in a storm. We were able to recover a lot of siding and beams from it. It was all loaded on the semi and trailers to get it home. The beams made a nice entry way for the new studio and also went inside to support the loft floor and roof. We put new OSB and standing loc rib metal on the roof. The entire barn was insulated with a spray on foam insulation. 160 sheets of drywall and the walls were covered. That was a lot of work. Most of it will be covered with old barn wood, but some drywall will remain in the classroom area to help reflect the light. The furnace and central air is installed and functioning. Sure makes it nice for working on the really hot days! The floor was done with a stain product, but doesn't seem to be as durable as I had hoped. That will be covered up with something else. The kitchen cupboards will go in as soon as they are delivered. We did get the ceiling and walls done in the kitchen and it looks great with the old barn wood! We have our sites on another old barn that has a bad foundation. The owners want it torn down before it falls down. This will give us enough wood to finish the interior of the studio and also repair our other large barn. I'll be sure to post more photos as we progress. |
